Furnaces generate heat by burning oil or natural gas (or by being powered by electricity) and then dissipating the heat throughout the home. Heat pumps use electricity and refrigerant to transfer outdoor air inside. Because heat pumps work like reverse air conditioners, they can actually be used as air conditioners in the summer.
Window air conditioners are portable and great at blowing air in one direction. Standalone units are similar, but stay inside and can be moved from room to room. Central air conditioners require the most space for installation, but circulate cool air the most evenly and efficiently throughout the home.
In some cases, the choice will be made for you. If you live in a high-rise unit, there might not be space to install your own central air and/or furnace and you'll have to either rely on the building or use a portable unit.
How the unit is powered is another consideration: If you have access to natural gas, connecting your unit to a line might be the easiest and most practical choice. Electricity usually costs more than natural gas, but a very efficient unit might be the most cost-effective option, especially if you're using a heat pump to replace both the furnace and air conditioner.
Air conditioner and furnace warranties are generally set by the manufacturer, but there's also the option to get extra coverage with a Lowe's protection plan.
For central air conditioners, these are the minimum size requirements:
Sometimes increased energy efficiency isn't the best reason to replace an air conditioner or furnace. Here are the criteria you should be using instead:
The general rule of thumb is the higher the AFUE rating, the better the return on investment. But if you live in a more moderate climate where you won't need a very highly efficient unit, an AFUE rating of around 80 might be a more cost-effective option for you. Programmable thermostats help heat and cool your home most efficiently by reducing the amount of work done when nobody's home. Installing a programmable thermostat is something you can do yourself so you can start saving on your energy bill right away.
Some thermostats are also "smart", which means you can control its settings through an app on your smartphone or tablet. Some also have built-in integration with other apps and programs, like Alexa or Google Assistant.
