How to Build Wooden Characters for Halloween

These adorably spooky and colourful wooden characters will have you all set to celebrate Halloween. Plus, they are sure to be a hit with the little ones!

Cut the Pine Planks

  • 1.1Use a mitre saw to cut all five 2" x 6" pine planks to different lengths, making figures of varying heights.
  • 1.2Cut the 2" x 8" pine plank for the base, where the figures will attach.
  • 1.3Trace the figures cut lines for the five 2" x 6" planks for the heads of the figures then cut using a jigsaw.

Sand the Cuts

Use a sander and sandpaper to smooth down all of the cuts.

Paint the Figures

  • 3.1Paint the base for the craft black.
  • 3.2Use different colours—like white, orange, purple, and green—for the five figures.

Assemble the Project

  • 4.1Position the 2" x 6" plank figures along the 2" x 8" plank black base, placing them at an angle for a fun touch.
  • 4.2Secure the figures to the base along the bottom with screws.

Have Fun Decorating!

Now it’s time to decorate the figures. Let your creativity loose and have fun with it. Here are a few ideas:

  • Use stickers to make the eyes
  • Cover the mummy in burlap or gauze
  • Glue on some synthetic autumn leaves
  • Decorate with raffia or coloured ribbons
  • Make the cat’s moustache using a rope
