Range Hood Ventilation

Vented Range Hoods
Vented (ducted) range hoods filter the air out of the kitchen to the outdoors. These range hoods requires an air duct system installed, which means that there are limits to where vented range hoods can be installed. Vented range hoods tend to be more effective than ductless.
Note: Depending on the model, it may be necessary to clean the filter every month.

Ventless Range Hoods
Ventless range hoods operate by drawing the air in, filtering it, and then recirculating it back into the room. They come with either activated carbon or charcoal filters, which helps remove smoke and odours from the air.
Note: Depending on the model, it may be necessary to clean or change the filter once or twice a year.

Convertible Range Hoods
Convertible range hoods give you the choice between vented or ventless. You can use filters or an air duct system to clear the air of odour and smoke particles.

Other Things to Consider

Size: Range hoods should be at least 3 inches wider on each side than the range or cooktop, and should be as low as 18 in. and as high as 20 in. from the cooktop.
Power: Cubic feet per minute (CFM) is the measurement of air movement power in range hoods. For everyday cooks, a range hood with at least 350 CFM is recommended.
Sound: Measured in A-rated decibels (dbA), it is important to keep in mind the more power your range hood has, the louder it will be.
Filters: Filters on a vented range hood are removable and most are dishwasher safe. It is recommended you clean filters every month. Filters on ventless range hoods cannot be washed, but do need to be replaced every four to six months, depending on cooking frequency.

Types of Range Hoods

Under Cabinet Range Hoods

Under cabinet range hoods are attached to the underside of the cabinet above the cooktop. Available in vented and ventless, air ducts can be installed through the cabinet to a chase or through the back of the hood.

Wall Range Hoods

These range hoods are mounted on the wall above the cooktop. It can duct straight out of the back or be ducted straight up.

Island Range Hoods

Island range hoods hang from the ceiling over an island or peninsula. They come in many styles including stainless steel, glass, and curved metal. Usually they are installed higher from the cooktop than traditional range hoods to avoid blocking a view, so it recommended that island range hoods have a high CFM to compensate for the extra height and cross breezes.

Chimney Range Hoods

Chimney range hoods have a flue that mounts and vents through ductwork in the ceiling. They can be mounted to the wall or on the ceiling above an island. If there are cabinets above the cooktop, they will have to be removed for a chimney range to work effectively.

Over-the-Range Microwaves

Over-the-range microwaves have a built in fan that serves as a range hood. They are fully functioning and are installed over the cooktop. Benefits of this type of range hood include saving counter space, which is essential in small kitchens, and key cooking components are conveniently located in the same area.

Range Hood Features

Auto Shut Off

The auto shut off feature allows you to preset the fan to be shut off at a particular time.

Integrated Lights

Included in most hoods, integrated lighting helps illuminate the cooking area. Most come with three to four lights and have a low- and high-light level setting.

Removable Filter

A removable filter makes cleaning a range hood easy. Depending on how often the stove top is used, filters should be cleaned every month to avoid grease build-up.
