Help your local power company
By from Virginia beach on Aug 17, 2015
Bought this on advice from a friend to handle power outages from hurricanes and snowmagedons. This generator can run all your essentials, a fridge, freezer, portable ac unit, some lights. We make one room comfy and can run a small microwave when needed or toaster. It''s easy to set up, use and maintain. The price makes it worth it, if you go bigger than this go for a built in unit.

System would not provide adequate power to UPS sys

System, works, turns on easily with battery but was only outputting 97VAC when anything was plugged into it. Does not work properly, poor performance.

Very happy so far!

First, let me say how impressed I am to see Generac submitting responses to these reviews. That leaves a great first impression for Generac''s customer service. After the last power outage lasting nearly a full week, I decided that I needed a generator to keep the fridge, freezer, sump pumps and well pump operational. I did some research and decided that the XT8000 would be sufficient for my needs. It''s affordability was definitely a key factor as well. Even though this is a Lowe''s exclusive, which I don''t understand the purpose of, I trusted that Generac would not release anything that would tarnish their reputation for building quality products. I did call Generac, who assured me that parts and service are readily available. Assembly is easy if you have basic skills. As other reviews have stated, the battery connection was very tedious. And the pin to hold up the support handles on my unit would also not fit in the hole properly - but that could be fixed with a drill if needed. The back panel had a bit of a dent in it from shipping or shifting in the store, but not worth returning or complaining about. After properly filling with oil and just enough gas to test it, the unit started up with ease. It blew out a tremendous amount of smoke for the first couple of minutes. I just figured that was from oil on the internal components from assembly. The smoke cleared up, and it runs clean all the time now. Exhaust noise is practically eliminated thanks to a massive muffler system. Most of the noise is from the clatter of the engine and generator itself, and not unexpected. So yes, it''s loud, but so are all the other big generators out there. I wired up a generator inlet and a safety interlock device to properly and safely back-feed my panel. I ran my well pump and our oil fired hot water heater, along with quite a few other items for my test. I didn''t even hear the unit cycle for extra power. I haven''t used it longer than a few minutes for testing, but I''m confident that it will get us through when we need it. One thing that''s odd is the auto idle control feature. If the generator has any draw at all - and I mean any, it shoots up to full throttle. So don''t think it will idle down if you''re not drawing much. It will only idle down if you''re not drawing ANYTHING - which is rarely the case. Overall, I''m extremely happy with this purchase. Of course, time will tell the story of quality. And, now that I''ve installed a proper portable back up generator system, we will likely never need it. You''re welcome, neighbors.

Generac 6433XT Review
By from Wheatley on Jul 30, 2015
Avid Do-It-Yourselfer
I purchased the product recently for one main power my basement sump pumps. I discovered that a sump pump needs a lot of power to start up and run so I am glad I bought a big unit like this. My sump pump needs close to 3,000 amps to start and runs at about 1,500 amps so buying a small generator is not that useful, especially if you want to power most of your home''s utilities. That''s my ultimate goal. In the meantime I did the following. I placed the generator in the shed and ran a 14/2 wire from the generator to the sump pump, but discovered that is too long a run for that type of wire. I upgraded the wire to 10/2 and the pump runs fine. I probably could get away with 12/2 wire. The distance is about 70 feet. This unit runs quieter than I expected. Its heavy and if it didn''t have wheels I would have great difficulty moving it. You can tell that it is a quality item. They even siliconed the gas cap threads on top of the unit. I checked USA stores and Canadian ones and chose Lowe''s Canada. They had a sale at the time and I weighed the pros and cons of buying in the USA and paying the duty to bring it over the border. Putting the unit together was easy but I was surprised how many different tools used and how long it took me to do it. Bottom line is that I would recommend this unit and buy it at Lowe''s when they have a sale.

First, if you go looking for this model on the Generac website, you wont find it...yet. I called Generac to ask a few questions about the XT8000E and the person on the phone could not find that model and had to refer to a supervisor. The supervisor informed us both, that this is a new model and that was why it wasnt on the web site yet. FALSE. This model has been around for about two years now, ( I have found past reviews as far back as 2013??) but it''s a LOWES exclusive at the moment, so you wont find it on their website right now. Doesnt make me feel very good about the fact that Generac reps didnt know this, or are not allowed to say so. For others looking for specs and info on this model from Generac, PLEASE UNDERSTAND, this model is very different from the XG8000 model. Same running watts, different motor, different features like the idle function etc. Review: I only have about 2 hours of run time on this unit, so this review is just out of the box basically. First, mine came with the oil already in the crankcase. Thats bad since the guys loading it into my truck had to tilt it several times to move it around. Didnt seem to hurt it, no overflow or smoke when I started it, so I dont think the oil filled the head or anything in transport, but leaves me to believe that this unit may have been opened previously, or that they are coming from the factory filled in some cases. Assembly was easy, straight forward, although the pin to hold the handles in the "stretched out" position, wont go in the hole, needs to be reemed. Not a big deal. The folding handles are nice, but, this unit is heavy. If your on pavement, or a very flat lawn, you will be able to move it easily, but in my case, the shed where it is kept in up a slight hill, and was impossible to get up the hill on my own. Be careful, it moves best when PULLED by the handles. If you try to PUSH it like a wheelbarrow, it can easily tip over if the wheels hit something. With a full tank, this unit weighs around 275lbs. Started right away, and pull start worked fairly easy as well. At idol, this unit has a pretty decent vibration. It''s a single cylinder on rubber mounts so the vibration doesnt shake the whole chassis much ( some, but not alot ) but I did notice the vibration DOES shake the wiring around alot, which could cause chaffing, possibly disconnects. I also noticed the vibration at idol, does shake the exhaust and carb quite a bit. So, being experienced in small engines, a check of all bolts and connections was needed after running to look for anything vibration loose. I found two bolts shook loose on the head, so might want to watch after running this unit, to recheck things before putting it away or before the next use. Luckily, it runs in normal RPMs most of the time if your using it for an outage, and the motor is smooth at the higher RPM. It is quieter then my previous units, but still pretty loud, but understand, almost ALL gens are loud under load. Think of your lawnmower running constantly. There are quieter units, but they are significantly more expensive. You CAN plug the battery charger into one of the outlets when the generator is running to charge the starter battery, or plug it into a wall outlet if just periodically charging the battery without running the gen. I usually start my generators about once a month to run anyway, so I will be charging the battery at those times as well. An automatic charging hook up to the battery would have been a good idea, maybe on future models?? I went ahead and looked at service centers just in case, this thing will not be easy to get serviced in my area, and warranty work must be done by a service. I''ve had 9 generators in the past, and most will fail after they break in at around 20~30 hours, and many times after continuous running for hours, ( when you need them most ) so the reliability of this unit wont be known for quite some time. I will update reviews. I gave this an overall good rating to start with. It started, ran for a couple hours, supplied good stable voltage and went together well. It''s a good looking unit, but nice looks and fancy handles dont count when you need a machine that will do the job when you need it. I would gladly give up appearance for reliability anyday. We''ll see.

Look for problems before assembly.
By from Pennsylvania, USA on Jul 08, 2015
I had to speak with Generac and the store manager. The first generator : The recoil did not return the rope. The 12vdc charger socket was broken. Lowe''s replaced the unit. The second generator: the fuel filter on the gas tank was torn. The back weather proof enclosure of the control panel was broken. The spark plug wire was broken, same as the floor unit at the store. Awaiting for Lowe''s to replace this unit. Hopefully three times is a charm.
