Packing List & Tips

for Moving Out

Whether you're leaving home for the first time or simply ready to switch to a new apartment, moving out can be a stressful and overwhelming experience.

Follow our quick and easy tips to build your packing list, plus moving checklist essentials to help save your time and sanity, so you can focus on what really matters — making a fresh start in your new residence.

4 Hidden Life Hacks For Packing You Should Know

1. Get organized

Label everything in detail

Prevent sliding into messy chaos while unpacking by keeping your boxes clearly marked and grouped by room. For quick and easy reference, use a colour-coding system with multicoloured sticker labels, markers, or tape.

Make sure that each box has its contents labelled on the sides so they can still be visible, even when they are stacked. If you expect to pack a large number of boxes for your move, add another layer of organization by numbering them to avoid forgetting anything.

2. Pack smart

Think outside the box

It will could take several days or even weeks until you are fully settled in your new space. Set aside an overnight bag or luggage for easy access to personal items such as toiletries, your laptop, and a change of clothes. Use a clear plastic bin for all other items needed after your move so you can conveniently see what's needed inside (e.g. box cutter, flatware, plates, mugs, paper towels, phone charger, etc.).

For your bedroom, you can also save time from unpacking with simple tricks that repurpose and improvise what you already have. For example, use stretch wrap to cover your drawers and jewellery displays for a tidy takedown and setup. You can also keep your clothes grouped together on their hangers and cover them with a garbage bag so they can be quickly added again to your new closet.

3. Plan ahead

Prep your future
kitchen and bath

If you are renting a new apartment, take time to clean with all-purpose cleaning products and fix up your kitchen and bathroom in advance.

By keeping these high-traffic areas ready, you are taking proactive steps to give yourself peace of mind in the early weeks after you settle in.

Ensure that your cookware and kitchenware items are carefully packed for safe transport. Stack your plates vertically in moving boxes so that they are less likely to break. If you're running out of bubble wrap, any extra clean clothing such as sweaters and socks will come in handy to protect fragile items such as dishes and glasses.

You should also stock your bathroom so that it is equipped for use right away. Having basics such as a new shower curtain, towels, and toilet paper will help to make your arrival more comfortable and manageable.

4. Take photos

Keep helpful reminders
and records

Having your phone or camera available not only helps to capture special memories as you begin a new chapter in your life, but also serves a practical purpose.

To start, this will help you avoid getting tangled and confused while setting up your electronics. Before disconnecting, add labels to each wire or cable, then snap a photo of how they are hooked up to your device. Keep any stray pieces in a plastic bag and tape it to the back of each unit.

If you are leaving a rental, be sure to save final images of your space after it's been cleared out. This may come in handy if you need to deal with any issues related to your deposit or problems with your landlord.
