Everything you need to know to make a fresh start in a new home.

A young couple carries moving boxes together. One is filled with colourful papers, while the other balances small potted plants on top.

Plan ahead for a stress-free move to your new home, apartment, or dorm.

Follow our ultimate moving checklist to organize your moving supplies and prepare for the unexpected. We’ve got helpful tips and packing list essentials to save your time and sanity.

8 Weeks (Or More) Before Moving Day

Buy your moving supplies.

If you haven't kept original packaging for some of your belongings, you'll need new boxes and other essentials like bubble wrap and tape.

Get organized.

Use an app or a binder to keep your paperwork for estimates, receipts, and important dates together in one spot.

Plan ahead for your family.

Notify your children's current and future schools for transfer records and book your babysitter, if needed.

Research your options.

Whether you're just renting a truck or hiring a moving company, start gathering your estimates.

Purge everything.

Put aside items you won't take on your move, room by room. Consider selling your extra things online or donating to charity.

Take note of valuables and fragile items.

Put them aside for special packing and ask your moving company about insurance coverage.

Start packing early.

Work with seasonal and rarely used belongings first.

4 Weeks Before Moving Day

Follow up and confirm plans.

Make sure you’ve booked any service elevators and that your moving company or truck is locked in. Arrange for utilities setup at your new home to start one day before move-in.

Give your friends and family your new contact info.

Throw a party or send a note to let them know about your move.

Submit change of address paperwork.

Update your government IDs and contact your bank, doctor, dentists, insurance providers, Canada Post, subscription services, etc.

Eat more food.

Empty out your refrigerator and freezer by filling your stomach.

Label everything, especially wires or cables for your electronics.

Keep stray pieces sealed in a plastic bag and taped to the back of the unit.

Carefully wrap fragile items.

Use bubble wrap or extra clean clothing for a layer of protection. Stack your plates vertically in moving boxes so they’re less likely to break.

2 Weeks Before Moving Day

Book off time from work.

Let your employer know about your move.

Fill your prescriptions.

Make sure you have enough medication to last the next few weeks.

Clean and defrost your fridge and freezer.

Learn more about our appliance installation services to make your move easier.

1 Week Before Moving Day

Get the family to pack their luggage as if leaving on a two-week vacation.

It could take time until you’re fully settled in your new space.

Pack items you’ll need after your move in a clear plastic bin.

Items such as paper towels and phone chargers will be easy to see and access when you need it.

Use stretch wrap to cover your drawers and jewellery displays.

You can also keep your clothes grouped together on hangers and cover them with a garbage bag to quickly add them again to your new closet.

Confirm your new landlord’s contact information.

Just in case you may need to reach him/her on moving day.

Moving Day

Take photos to keep helpful reminders and records.

Snapshots make it easier to hook up systems and come in handy when dealing with any deposit issues or problems with your landlord.

Clean up your old space.

You and your landlord may inspect it together before you return your keys.

Use stretch wrap to cover your drawers and jewellery displays.

You can also keep your clothes grouped together on hangers and cover them with a garbage bag to quickly add them again to your new closet.
