FYI:

The ENERGY STAR® label is an easy way for you to identify what products are energy efficient. It means you don't need to wade through complicated specifications to find the best product; the government has done the hard work for you. Appliances, building products, lighting, electronics, heating and cooling equipment and other products with the blue ENERGY STAR® logo have met strict energy efficiency criteria to qualify for the designation. It's your guarantee that the product you're buying saves energy, saves money, and helps protect the environment. The ENERGY STAR® label is also often used by manufacturers, utilities and the government to grant rebates and tax credits.

What can Energy Star® products do for you—and for our planet?

  • A new ENERGY STAR® qualified dishwasher saves nearly 19,000 litres of water per year, compared to washing dishes by hand. If you do hand-wash dishes, keep the water off unless you're rinsing. Also, operate your dishwasher only with a full load.
  • Standard washing machines often use more than 150 litres of water per load. ENERGY STAR® qualified washing machines use about half the water and 37% less energy to run.
  • ENERGY STAR® qualified bulbs use two-thirds less energy, generate 70% less heat, and last up to 10 times longer than ordinary bulbs. ENERGY STAR® light fixtures easily accommodate energy-efficient bulbs and distribute light more efficiently, using one-third less energy than standard fixtures.
  • Heating, cooling, and ventilation products (like air conditioners, furnaces, boilers, dehumidifiers, and ventilators) can qualify for the ENERGY STAR® rating. The older and less energy-efficient your existing equipment, the greater your long-term savings with ENERGY STAR® products. For example, by replacing a 10-year-old room air conditioner with an ENERGY STAR® qualified model, you can save up to $150 over the life of the product.

What other eco-friendly products are useful?

A dripping faucet can waste as much as 833 litres of water per month. Simply installing an aerating-flow faucet in your kitchen or bathroom will substantially reduce water consumption.

An estimated one out of every five toilets leaks, wasting up to 1,900 litres of water per day. Often, a replacement-fill valve can fix the problem. They cost as little as $7 apiece and can be installed easily.

Low-VOC Paint:

Some of the most harmful chemicals found in paint are volatile organic compounds, or VOCs, which are toxic. Even after the paint has dried, VOCs can continue to be released from the paint for years, potentially harming the household occupants. Paint is the second largest source of VOC emissions into the atmosphere after automobiles!

Use paints that contain low or no VOCs and a non-harmful drying agent instead. They use water as a carrier instead of petroleum-based solvents.

All the advantages of low-VOC paints:

  • Environmentally-friendly, causing lower levels of ozone pollution.
  • Fewer emissions of smog-forming chemicals.
  • Better indoor and outdoor air quality.
  • Allergies or sensitivities to these paints is uncommon.
  • Ideal for commercial applications, and offer excellent
    "scrub-ability".
  • Quick-drying.
  • Low odour.
  • Non-yellowing.
  • Increased UV resistance and flexibility.
