When Should i hire a mover?

Save money and time by researching and hiring a mover at least 6 weeks prior to your move date. Don't forget to ask for references!

You should fill out a change of address form at your local post office 2-3 weeks prior to your move.

Notify utility services two weeks prior to your move. Schedule them to turn off at your old home the day after your move and to turn on services a few days prior to your move into your new home.

Moving is a great time to clean out and cleanse your home of many thing you don't want or need any more. There are several options you can do to get rid of these items:

  • Have a Yard Sale
  • Post a Local Ad online or in the paper to sell
  • Donate to Charity (many charities will even come and pick up from your home!)

should I hire movers?

There's many things you need to consider when deciding whether movers are the best option for you. Are you moving locally or in a short distance? Do you have a lot to move? If your move is local and don't have much to move…consider a DIY move and get friends and family to help. Show them your appreciation with pizza!

If your move is more complex, consider hiring movers for a stress-free move. Be sure to do your research to make sure that not only are you getting the best deal, but you're making the best decision for the safety and security of your personal belongs. Here's a few things to bear in mind when researching movers.

1. Hourly Rate: Resist the urge to go with the company with the lowest rate. Chances are they're charging less to beat out their competitors and may be likely to cut corners in other areas of the moving process to make up for the pay-cut.

2. Check Reviews: Online reviews and testimonials from friends and family are the best and most honest way to make sure a company measures up to your standards.

3. Ask for Credentials: Every moving company should have some sort of moving license as well as insurance. Ask to see these before you book your mover to make sure you and your belongings are covered.

4. Shop Around: Don't be afraid to get several estimates. A moving company should send someone to your house to survey your belongings and give a estimate based on your initial discussions. Any business that refuses to come to your house or only give estimates over the phone should be scratched off your list. This will avoid any "extra charges" many movers come up with after they have started moving your belongings. Be sure to also get your estimate in writing so no additional charges can be added once you book your mover.

5. Don't Miss the Fine Print: Be sure you have read the contract in full detail signing. Make sure both you and the moving company fully understand each others responsibilities before, during and after the move to avoid any miscommunication or additional charges.
