Turn an inexpensive terra-cotta saucer into a personalized soap dish with mosaic tiles. Like the look? Use this easy technique to spruce up other items, such as a picture frame or jewelry box..
Collect tile and ceramic pieces. Include costume jewelry or broken china for a personal touch. Select pieces with raised details for added dimension in the finished design.
Seal the clay saucer with stone and tile sealer.
Cut the pieces with tile nippers (wear safety goggles and gloves while cutting tile). Then, spread a small amount of tile adhesive onto the saucer with a putty knife. Press the tile pieces into the adhesive (use a toothpick to adjust the pieces). Start in the middle and work your way out to the edges and around the sides and bottom. If using shards of varying thickness, press them in at different depths for a more even surface. Let set for 24 to 48 hours.
Mix sanded powder grout with water, following the instructions on the package. Let set for five minutes.
Spread grout over the entire saucer with your fingers. Wipe away excess with paper towels. Let set for several days.
Cover the entire piece with grout sealer. Let dry.
10 - 1-1/4" x 6" x 5-1/4" clay saucers
1 quart stone and tile sealer
1 quart tile adhesive
Sanded powder grout (10 pounds)
