Your Guide To Creating A Beautiful Lanscape

add a planting bed to your home landscape

Call attention to your home's good features. A specimen shrub or small tree might accent your front door or landing, and well-placed shade trees can frame your house like a picture.

Planning a Flower Bed

  • Decide what type and shape planting bed fits your current landscape. Design and draw a plan on graph paper.
  • Select suitable plants for the bed based on available sunlight and water requirements. Also take into consideration the plants' size at maturity. All of this information is on the plant tag.
  • Draw the plants on the graph paper. Taller plants should be near the back of a planting bed that is beside a wall or fence. Place taller plants in the centre of a round or oval planting bed.
  • Assess the health of existing plants and evaluate how they look in their present spot. Remove any undesirable plants.
  • Do a soil test and make the necessary amendments as recommended by the test results.
  • Using a garden hose, surveyor's flags or wooden stakes, lay out the bed lines according to the planting plan.
  • Prepare the new planting bed. To work up large areas of soil, use a tiller.
  • Before planting, lay out all plants using the spacing measurements from the planting plan. Make sure the best side is turned toward the front or side that will be most visible.
