What Do You Want To Do?

Proper insulation will make your home warmer in winter and cooler in summer while also saving you money on energy costs. Insulation forms a barrier between the living areas of your home and outdoor temperature extremes, which is particularly important during those cold Canadian winters. With the right tools and materials, it isn't hard to install insulation yourself. Here's what you'll need:

Insulation Info + Tips:

  • Consider the climate in which you live when selecting your insulation type. An insulation's R-Value is a measure of its ability to resist heat that travels through it. Homes in the relatively warmer climates of the Canadian Pacific South-West may not need as high an R-Value as the rest of Canada does.
  • How do you know if you have poor insulation? In the winter, your walls may be cold to the touch and/or exhibit mould growth. In the summer, your air conditioning system may seem ineffective or your basement may show signs of mould growth. If this is the case, consider re-insulating your home.
  • Consider Roxul SAFE 'N' SOUND insulation, a high-density material that's specifically designed to absorb sound and reduce noise traveling from one room to another. Made from stone wool, SAFE 'N' SOUND reduces transmission by trapping sound waves and vibrations in its unique fibre structure.
  • Basement walls are different from the other walls in your home because they receive significant moisture flows from both inside and outside the house. Basement walls should be insulated on the outside with rigid insulation suitable for below-grade installations, such as extruded polystyrene or rigid fibreglass.
