What is a Christmas swag, you may ask? A swag is the perfect way to decorate your mantel this season! It is the finished product when fresh garlands, branches, and boughs are covered with stunning decorative ornaments and accessories.
If you don't have a mantel, a swag would also look lovely on a vignette, draped along a staircase rail, or over your bed's headboard. You could even hang one over a doorway or on your porch — the possibilities are endless!
I love the look of fresh greens and the scent they add to my living space, they're a great way to bring the Christmas of outdoors, inside!
To make my swag, I started with a 20-foot white pine fresh garland and a package of decorative silver mantel clips. I placed the mantel clips evenly spaced across the mantel, then draped the garland through them twice. Once the garland was hung, I strung a set of warm white Christmas fairy lights throughout.
Once the lights were strung through, I added extra branches of fresh greens: pine tips, Western Cedar boughs, Fraser fir boughs, and pieces of fresh mini swags. And once I thought I was done, I added more.
To secure the extra branches to the pine garland, I used a floral wire to tie them on.
Now comes the best part — decorating! I used a variety of ornaments from Lowe's Comfort & Joy Christmas decor line which has all of the colours and the look that I wanted for my mantel! Last year, I decorated my home in all of the same holiday colours, so this mantel will fit in perfectly.
I finished off the swag with a bow hung at the centre, made with this Buffalo check stag head ribbon.
Once you have the swag draped across your mantel space, it's all just a matter of hanging the ornaments.
Tip: Hanging the ornaments is as simple as tying them to the swag with string — make sure to space them out so your swag looks evenly decorated.
To decorate this swag, I used the following ornaments:
I absolutely love how my mantel came together! And honestly, it only took about an hour to put it all together.
What I love so much about this swag is that it looks great both during the day and at night. During the day, you can see all of the details and cute ornaments, and at night it's all lit up with sparkly lights. So pretty.
To finish off the mantel, I added two starry table piece cloches. The evergreen swag is the star of the show, so I didn't want to detract from it with too much other decor, so these cloches were the perfect addition.
