Build a Bench Between Two Bookcases

The two bookcases are joined together by a bench constructed from 2x4 boards, plywood, and moulding to finish off the edges. The basic frame consists of four rails, six stiles, three braces, a plywood top, and a base made from 1/4" faced plywood. The length can be modified to fit the space available in the room. Lowe's is happy to provide this information as a service to you.

Cut list

Part Material Size Quantity
rails 2x4s 60" 4
stiles 2x4s 15" 6
braces 2x4s 5" 3
top 3/4" plywood 14" x 60" 1
base shelf 1/4" plywood 12" x 60" 2
base moulding shingle moulding 60" 1
moulding over stiles mullion 15" 3
moulding over wall and bookshelf cove as needed 2

Steps to Make a Bench

Step 1: Create frame base by connecting two bottom rails with three braces using wood glue and drywall screws. The braces are attached inside the rails.

Step 2: Attach four stiles to the corners of the rails using wood glue and drywall screws.

Step 3: Now attach the other two stiles to the top and bottom rails using wood glue and drywall screws.

Step 4: Attach frame to bookcases. Attach to the frame from the inside of the bookcases using wood glue and drywall screws on both ends of the bench.

Step 5: Take the 1/4" plywood base, beginning with the overall piece 12 x 60", and mark notches in corners. Trace a scrap 2 x 4 to mark notches, and cut out with a jigsaw. If necessary, cut the base board in half for easier assembly.

Step 6: Attach 1/4" plywood base to the bottom of the frame using wood glue and drywall screws.

Step 7: Attach the 1/4-inch-thick plywood top of the bench using wood glue and drywall screws. (Note: The top hangs over front of base by 2 inches to allow for a 14-inch-wide cushion.

Step 8: To finish off the front rail of the bench, attach a 60-inch piece of shingle moulding. To finish off the three front rails, attach 15-inch strips of mullion trim.

Step 9: Run cove moulding up the sides of bookcase to cover where bookcases meet the wall. (Tip: Countersink all screws, and fill with wood putty. Once dry, sand smooth.)
