There are several reasons to put up a fence: privacy, borders, and architectural enhancement to name a few. No matter the reason, there's a fence at Lowe's to suit your home and landscape.

Important Considerations Before Building Your Fence

Before planning and purchasing your fence materials, ask yourself these questions:

  • What will the function of the fence be?

  • What style will best accomplish this function?

  • What style and material will blend with my landscaping and the architecture of my home?

Before proceeding, a few preliminary steps are in order:

  • Discuss your plans with any neighbours whose property lies along your proposed fence line to make sure your fence is on your property.

  • Before beginning any excavation, check for underground utilities.

  • Check local zoning laws, which may regulate the size and placement of your fence. If you live in a historic district, check with your neighbourhood association before proceeding with your plans.

  • Apply for the proper building permit as directed by local code.

Wood fencing is commonly used as a decorative means of providing privacy for homes in neighbourhood settings. It's also a good choice for setting boundaries for small children and pets. Paint or stain your fence to match your landscape or keep it natural.

Chain-link fencing is an economical way to enclose an area. Chain link is a good choice for keeping pets in or other creatures out. Made from galvanized steel wire, the fence material itself is referred to as "fabric." Chain-link fencing comes in 50 foot length rolls 3 to 12 feet in height. If you don't like the silvery look of the bare fence, it's available with a weather-resistant vinyl coating, usually green or black. Single and double prefabricated gates are available to complete the project.

Decorative metal fencing offers the appearance of wrought iron, yet is made from powder-coated steel or aluminum. Available in a variety of styles and sizes, the components are easy to assemble, making this type of fencing a great do-it-yourself project. For ultimate ease of installation, look for fencing with a "no dig" option, using a pronged post support that is driven into the ground.

Thinking of building a deck? Plan ahead. Most deck planning starts with the usual photo-op in mind, including hammocks, umbrella drinks and giant friend-filled fiestas. Yet rarely do such plans budget for the maintenance you'll need to do in years to come, such as keeping up with restaining and water sealing or dealing with leftover blotches from sunscreen spatters and red wine spills. And what about a summer's worth of fade marks where the table and doormat used to be? Lowe's has everything you need to help build and maintain a deck that will last you for years!
